LOOK UP

Yesterday I discovered a box with two dozen, beautiful red roses on my porch. It immediately put a big smile on my face and made my busy day brighter. My husband’s thoughtful gift filled my heart with gratitude and love. The gift, as intended, reminded me of how much he cares for me. As I carefully arranged each long stem into a vase,  I was repeatedly pricked by a tiny thorn. Eventually, the discomfort became a distraction.

With each prick, my mind would drift from the beautiful, aromatic, crimson buds to the annoying pain in my fingertips. There was no blood loss, nor permanent damage, just aggravation. Every “ouch” diminished my mood, and my smile soon became a scowl.

When finished, I looked up at the vase full of roses, and my heart was filled, once again with the joy that was intended. Pressing through, I had created a beautiful arrangement. Not only was my mood brighter, but the room was filled with the warmth, and aroma the roses added.

In life we oftentimes encounter situations where discomforts become distractions. Your day began with a grateful worship, and positive energy, then, it was quickly interrupted by “Breaking News “, an unruly driver on your way to work, an unexpected weather change, or a bad cup of coffee. If allowed, these aggravations can ruin your morning. We must not allow mere annoyances to steal our joy. Those distractions are tricks of the enemy. He wants to steal your joy, don’t let him!

Job 35:5

“Look up at the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds so high above you.”

Elihu's point is to remind Job of God's vastness and transcendence. The heavens and clouds symbolize God's greatness, which is beyond human comprehension.

Look up! Look up, and see God in the bigger picture of your life. Look up, and find the light in your heart that surpasses all understanding. Just look up!
